The urban being between environment and landscape. On the old town as an emerging subject
2018
The landscape units of the Sicilian mountainous inland, as for the case of Petralia Soprana, are marked by the presence of ancient urban centres controlling the agricultural territory, from which they derived their own wealth, and to which they conferred landscape significance. The unity between economy and landscape has been interrupted by the radical transformation of the socio-economic structure and the technologic progress, which have eroded the consistency between structures and superstructures. We propose an assessment approach based on a synthesis of semiotic and phenomenological view. The approach mainly focuses on the basic concepts and contents of the valuation process that can be…
The Use of Landscape Indicators in Environmental Assessment
2016
A fundamental characteristic of the Strategic Environmental Assessment procedure is the use of indicator-like tools for measuring effects generated by plans and programmes that affect the environment and landscape. There are many kinds of indicator categories, but this chapter focuses attention on those related specifically to the landscape. Measuring many aspects of reality, by indicators, is easy today—but for landscape and its cultural aspects, the same fails to apply because, differently from water, air, soil and all the biotic and abiotic elements, technicians must consider variables in which the degree of subjectivity is very high. In spite of this reflection, Strategic Environmental …
PROPOSAL FOR A LANDSCAPE EVALUATION SYSTEM
2023
Abstract. This paper describes a system, currently being designed, for both perceptual analysis and aesthetic evaluation of a landscape. The choice of this topic is motivated by the fact that systems related to landscape visibility (e.g. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for visual impact assessment) are not fully satisfactory when it comes to assessing the aesthetic appearance. They mainly analyse geometric aspects, such as the width of visual basins or the interference of visual trajectories, which can be expressed by objective and comparable parameters. Instead, for effective landscape knowledge and protection, it is important to consider other factors that cannot be easily measured…
